Kinesio Tape

What is Kinesio Tape?

The Kinesio Taping technique was developed by Dr Kenzo Kase in 1979. His objective was to create a therapeutic tape and taping technique which could support joints and muscles, without restricting range of motion.  He also hoped to formulate a tape which could have benefits for the lymphatic system. Both objectives were realised, with continuing research into its multiple effects.

Kinesio taping has provided an effective way of helping to manage oedema, Lymphoedema, bruising + swelling post-surgery and more.

Kinesio Tape

  • Made from very thin, porous 100% cotton fabric.
  • Unique wave pattern microscopically lifts the skin, allowing lymphatic flow.
  • Does not limit range of movement.

  • 100% uses a gentle medical grade heat-activated acrylic adhesive.
  • Improves comfort by allowing the skin to breathe.
  • Tension on the tape has the ability to relax or stimulate muscles.

  • 100% latex free – making it skin friendly.
  • Water resistant.
  • Offers a variety of application techniques to best meet individual client needs.

  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Possesses optimum elastic qualities similar to human skin and muscles.
  • Durable enough to stay on for several days at a time (3-5).

Why use Kinesio Tape as part of my treatments?

  • Reduces oedema swelling and inflammation due to its direct effect on the superficial lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin
  • Decreasing oedema (fluid swelling) – facilitates circulatory and lymphatic flow
  • Very effective in reducing bruising or contusions due to trauma, accident, injury or post-surgery (cosmetic, plastic or general surgery, accelerating recovery
  • Can be effective in relieving acute and chronic pain by reducing pressure on sensitive pain receptors under the skin
  • Can help in the management of scar tissue
  • Helps to soften fibrotic tissue
  • Supports muscles in movement

What is a patch test?

Although the tape is hypoallergenic, a patch test is always recommended when considering the use of Kinesio tape for the first time as part of your treatment. A small piece of tape is usually applied to the inside of your forearm and worn for 24 hours to see if there is any reaction to the adhesive. There are some circumstances, after checking your detailed medical history, where the tape can be applied to provide immediate relief.

Will it restrict my movement and day to day activities?

No. You will be encouraged to move and continue your activities as normal.

Can I shower and/or swim with the tape on?

Yes, the tape is water resistant, so you will be able to shower, swim or bathe normally.

How many times will I need to be taped?

More than one application may be required to achieve the best results. Effectiveness and progress will be reviewed prior to and following each application.

How will I know what, or what not to do, whilst wearing the tape?

Following an assessment this will be discussed with you on application and a detailed guidance sheet on tape management and safe removal will be issued.
